Trust & Integrity in a Country

Just saw somewhere that in 1998 Korea was on a verge of an economic collapse and then they began the gold collection campaign where people bought their gold to help the country and in the end were able to collect 227 tonnes of gold and were able to avoid the economic collapse.

Just wondering if something like this would be possible in a country like India? Not because people are poorer here, but because of the kind of governance and accountability we have in this country, because of corruption, because of lack of trust in the government or in any public body. Even if people were willing to give away their gold it’s not unfair to say that much of it would just disappear into thin air. This is not about the current ruling party, in-fact this stems from a very fundamental issue of integrity among individuals which could only be fixed at the roots, during childhood, during teenage, this is on everyone, government to make strict rules and get them enforced, citizens to exhibit honesty and integrity.

Governance is about trust. Governance is about honesty. It’s about integrity. This is what would make a country prosper.

P.S. I am pretty sure people would be more willing to donate the gold to a temple than to help the country in an economic collapse. Not sure what that says about us.
